"Change" | Reflection by Marian Frederickson (Vestry Class of 2022)
I am so happy that I am able to share the attached picture from my yard! For the past week I have gone outside each day in search of some concrete arrival of Spring. This particular crocus has been teasing me, taking its time to finally emerge in full bloom.
I consider myself a true New Englander for a variety of reasons but one of the things that I love most about the area is the change of the seasons. Four times a year we are presented with weather changes that govern how we dress, eat, harvest, play, exercise, socialize and so on. Each season provides us with new joys and challenges, and of course holidays, just as we are getting a little tired of the previous ones. The month of March can be a particularly long month as we wait for lingering snow to melt, winds to lighten and crocuses to bloom. But the crocuses are in fact starting to bloom giving us hope and optimism for the days ahead.
The changes and hardships that have occurred over the course of the last year have been severe and have deeply affected us all. We are slowly emerging from a brutally harsh season, the likes of which none of us have ever experienced before. Our recovery journey will be long and difficult but like any new season it is filled with opportunity for change. While I long for the return to past comforts and routines, I pray that the new season of Spring and our reflections during the final days of the Lenten season will lead us to embrace the opportunities for growth and positive changes in the days ahead.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
