Trinity on the Green, New Haven, CT
I'm sure that the people who built this magnificent church had to sacrifice in order to give their fare share. Building and maintaining a church is not for the meek and mild. Timothy wrote, "I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of hands; for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self control."
To those whose task it was to go forward, we owe a debt of gratitude. For every name on a plaque you see along the side of the walls, there were hundreds who will go unnamed.
Never feel that your pledge is not important. There are many ways you can give of yourself--your time, talents and treasure. There were many years when I could not pledge and no one kicked me out or shunned me or my family.
I was married here as were my children. They were baptized here and confirmed here. Now my grandchildren are here and for that, I am proud.
I've been a member of Trinity for 60 years and I can finally share with you my love for this place.
I love singing with the Trinity Singers. I love the look clergy has when they baptize a child. I love it when the kids come up from Sunday School. I love the service at Easter when I am reminded that Jesus died for me. I love the sermons that educate and enlighten me.
Through the years, I have served on many committees. I was proud to serve on the Vestry, so I have seen both sides and I can assure you that there are hard working, honest folks who are in charge. Your money is well spent. Your children are well cared for.
Every one of the clergy and staff are devoted to making Trinity Church a safe and loving place to come to.
You are welcomed to come to a Vestry meeting any time and share your thoughts. You are welcome to come to the office any time and see what makes this place run.
When you are asked to serve on the vestry or a committee, say "yes." It is only by saying yes that Trinity can survive and grow to serve others.
Let us leave for our children the same assurances that Trinity will be here for them and for their grandchildren.
That will be the best tribute we can give to those who have come before us.
