Our Tradition of Music

From the founding of Trinity in 1752, music has been an important part of its services of worship. By 1776, Trinity was taking the lead in establishing singing as a regular part of all Episcopal services throughout Connecticut.

The Spirit Singers lead the music for the 9:00 am service including hymns, service music and anthems. They sing three Sundays out of the month from September through the first week in June. During the summer months they sing informally every other Sunday. Also included in their regular schedule is the 5:00 pm Christmas Eve Service.

The Trinity Choir of Men and Boys is the oldest choir in the parish, having been founded in 1885. It is the seventh oldest such choir in America. The Men and Boys who comprise its membership come from not only the parish but also the entire central Connecticut area. The Men and Boys usually sing at the 11:00 am service and other special parish services, including occasional Evensongs.

It is fitting that, in a church with such a long tradition of choral leadership by children, the Choir of Men and Girls now takes a prominent place in the worship services of Trinity Church. The choir was founded in the Fall of 2003 comprising members auditioned from all over south-central Connecticut. Girls from grades 5 through 10 form the soprano section of the choir, accompanied by adult alto women, adult tenors and adult basses. These adults do not double the girls voice parts, but instead provide strong musical support of the soprano voices of the girls and, as with the Choir of Men and Boys, enable these young singers to offer and experience a great range of choral repertoire unavailable to choirs that sing only the treble line.

Organ CD by Stephen Buzard

Trinity's current organ scholar, Stephen Buzard, recently released his first recording, In Light or Darkness, which can be obtained from Amazon as a compact disc or MP3 download by clicking HERE. Stephen's recording showcases the large and colorful new instrument built by his father, John-Paul Buzard, at Second Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, Illinois, as well as his superb musicality. The equally colorful program includes works by Mendelssohn, Reubke, Howells, Vierne, Paulus, as well as a Schubert lied transcribed by the performer. An interesting "trailer" video for this recording can also be found on YouTube.
